Summary
The first session of individual talk therapy focuses on understanding your background, concerns, and goals. Your therapist explains the process, answers questions, and creates a supportive foundation for your therapeutic journey.

Are you planning to start therapy? It is normal to feel nervous. You will meet someone new and talk about things that are deeply personal. But do not worry! Individual talk therapy is safe and supportive. Your first session is all about getting started on your therapy journey, where I, Elmarie, a counsellor and psychotherapist, ensure you feel heard, respected, and comfortable.
Here is what you can expect from your first session:
In the first session, expect your therapist to learn more about who you are. Expect to talk about your day-to-day life, your work environment, relationships, and any current issues you are facing. No! You don’t have to tell your entire life story. Instead, you should talk about things in a manageable and relevant way. For many people, this introductory period eases initial anxiety about therapy.
After the therapist gets to know you, the focus of the session shifts to why you consider therapy at this particular time. There can be various reasons, including experiences of anxiety, stress, burnout, trauma, grief, loss, and relationship challenges. Remember, a therapist does not analyse or judge experiences. Instead, they listen carefully and try to understand the patterns. This step creates clarity.
One of the most important parts of a first talk therapy session is identifying your goals. No! You don’t have to prepare a fully formed answer. In fact, many people come to me unsure of exactly what they need from therapy. So, don’t worry! You just need to answer some easy questions, including what you want to feel, what situations you want to handle better, or what makes you happy.
After clarifying your goals, it’s time to outline how mental health services can help you. In this step, a simple talk therapy moves to an evidence-based process. Your therapist explains which therapeutic approach will be effective for your situation. Plus, you get to know how sessions are typically structured and what progress you can make over time.
It is the final step of your first talk therapy session. You can ask any questions you may have about the process. Many ask about how long therapy takes, how the sessions are scheduled, or what to do between sessions. And it’s completely normal if you don’t have questions.
Starting therapy can feel like a daunting step, especially if you don’t know what to expect. I hope this guide helps you feel confident as you prepare for your first session.
